Find answers to common volunteering questions

If you have any other questions, please reach out to us over email and we would be happy to answer them!

  • Setting up & supervising recycling stations
  • Learning about recycling in Metro Vancouver
  • Educating the public & raising awareness about recycling and waste reduction
  • Sorting and weighing event materials and recording data
  • Closing down recycling stations and assisting with loading the truck
A confirmation e-mail is sent a week before the event with all the details you will need (on-site contact, meeting point, and training video). Your response to the e-mail confirming or cancelling your shift is necessary.
You will get a text message letting you know about the e-mail.
Green Chair will provide a t-shirt during your volunteer shift but remember to wear clothes that are okay to get a little dirty. Dress according to the weather (that means sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen in the sun and rain jacket and extra socks in the rain or cold). Wear comfortable, practical shoes as you will be on your feet a lot. Don’t forget your water bottle and working gloves (if you have some, otherwise Green Chair will happily provide gloves for you).

We are always looking for passionate volunteers to contribute to our cause. Are you a budding website designer or photographer? Or do you love to organize clean-ups and outreach events? Contact us to tell us about you and how you want to collaborate with our team.

Review all the information sent to you before the event day. Please make sure you know where, when and who to meet. Keep the contact number on hand in case you are delayed or get lost!

  • Be attentive and engaged throughout your shift; do not use cellphones except when taking photos or contacting the volunteer coordinator.
  • Be positive and friendly to the rest of the team and public at all times.
  • Please keep to your allotted break time as directed by the volunteer coordinator; 15 mins for every 4 hrs worked and 30 mins for lunch breaks.
  • Be aware that we are all one team and you should be ready to help with other roles when needed.
  • If you need to switch or drop a shift, please let us know as soon as possible.
  • Be punctual and remain in your role until the end of your shift.
  • Remember that once you have your t-shirt on, you are representing Green Chair Recycling. You should properly conduct yourself.
  • Respect personal boundaries and space of other volunteers and everyone around you.
  • Have fun and smile!

Event Volunteers

See our Event Calendar and our Facebook page for our upcoming volunteer opportunities. Sign up is available on our website. Don’t hesitate to email us if you have any questions.

Our volunteers are very important to us so we treat you well! If your shift covers a lunch (or dinner) we will provide you with a delicious, locally-sourced, organic meal. Please tell us if you have any dietary requirements or allergies so that we can ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy. Snacks and drinks will also be provided throughout the volunteer shifts. You will not go hungry.

Of course! With more volunteers, we can make an even bigger impact. Be sure to tell us that you are bringing a friend (or friends) so that we can make sure we have enough food! On site sign up is available for most events.
Firstly, please check your emails (including your junk/spam folder) for an email from us with all of the event details. This email will typically be sent in a couple of days before an event when all of the information has been finalized.
If you haven’t received an email, apologies for this. We are probably madly organizing for our next event! Please contact us and we will respond with details of your shift as soon as possible.

The time and location will vary depending on the event. If you are unsure where or when to meet please check your emails (including your junk folder) for an email with all the details. If you are still unsure, please contact us.

Our volunteer shifts typically run for the whole event and range from 5 to 8 hours. Don’t worry if you can’t do a full shift, we would still love to have your help. Contact us to discuss your availability. Please note that due to security and event access we cannot always accommodate people who would like to do partial shifts.

Miscellaneous

All volunteers must sign our volunteer waiver form. A link to the file is included in all of our event sign up forms and can be found by clicking here.
Yes. If you are 15 to 18, you need to submit a waiver signed by a parent or guardian before or at your first shift. Please let us know if you are 15 to 18 and we can send you a copy of the waiver so you can bring it to your first event.
And don’t worry, you can still volunteer if you are under 15, but you will need to have a parent or guardian with you. What a great way to positively influence your parents!
Of course families are welcome, It is a fantastic learning experience making a difference together.
YES! Our volunteers are very precious to us and we pride ourselves in treating you well. We want you to have fun, make friends and be proud of being part of Green Chair Recycling. The volunteer work can be hard work (and smelly!) at times, but we go out of our way to make sure that you and all our volunteers are happy, having fun and are well looked after. We provide locally-sourced, organic lunches at our events. Plus you get access to some amazing events across Vancouver. We also organize (free) events for our volunteers including our annual Green Chair Recycling Appreciation party and award ceremony, BBQs, beach cleanups etc. Volunteer letters are provided for every shift you attend.
All volunteers will receive a volunteer letter via email within 2 weeks of the event. Please check your emails (including your junk or trash folders). If you cannot find your letter please email volunteers@gogreenchair.com with the event name, your full name, and the hours that you volunteered. You must sign out of the event with our Volunteer Coordinator and return your Green Chair t-shirt to get a volunteer letter.

All volunteers will receive a volunteer letter for the hours that they have volunteered. For us to provide a reference letter for you we need to have had a bit of time to get to know you and your work. If you need a reference letter then we ask that you have volunteered for at least 30 hours with Green Chair. Please ask the Volunteer Coordinator at the event and follow up with an email request to volunteers@gogreenchair.com.

Keep an eye out on our Facebook page and our website to learn about upcoming opportunities and sign up for as many events as you can!! See you soon.
